Professional Biography

Ian has been a Consultant at Wrightington Hospital for nearly 30 years and is currently the ‘Senior Clinician and Head of Service’.

He qualified from the University of Manchester Medical School in 1978, thereafter receiving training in the North West, Europe and the United States, the latter as a Clinical Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic.  He was appointed as a Consultant at Wrightington Hospital in 1991.

Formerly, Professor Trail also operated at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for almost 20 years.  He is also a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester and Professor at Edge Hill University.  He has also served as President of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand and Treasurer of the British Orthopaedic Association.  In addition, he has served as Editor of the Shoulder and Elbow Journal.

Since 1989 he has published over 120 research papers and has delivered numerous national and international presentations.  He has been Guest Lecturer at the American, Australian, South African, Indian and European Societies for Surgery of the Hand and Shoulder meetings.  Currently he has authored four books of surgery to the hand, elbow and shoulder.
