Professional Biography

Sohail Akhtar is a Plastic Surgeon who specialises in Hands and Reconstructive surgery with a specialist interest in nerve conditions, microsurgery, Dupuytren’s disease and arthritis of the hand.

He completed his undergraduate training at Liverpool University Medical School and then went on to complete his basic surgical training in both Liverpool and Leeds University Teaching Hospitals. It was during his basic surgical training that Sohail developed an interest in both Plastic Surgery and Hand surgery.

He subsequently undertook specialist training in Plastic Surgery in a National Plastic Surgery training program, which was based in Yorkshire. It was during this training programme that Sohail was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Plastic Surgery. After completing his training Sohail became a fully accredited Plastic Surgeon and is on the GMC specialist register for Plastic Surgery.

Sohail developed a specialist interest in hand surgery after undertaking a Hand Surgery fellowship at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby as well as a National Interface Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit. In order to gain a broader understanding of nerve conditions he has also undertaken a visiting fellowship to Siri Raj Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, which is an advanced centre for microsurgery in the Far East.

Sohail started as a Consultant in Durham where he treated a broad number of conditions including treating patients for skin cancer, hand injuries and those patients requiring breast reconstruction and cosmetic procedures. He then moved to Wrightington Hospital where he predominately specialises in hand surgery but also continues to perform a broad range of plastic surgery procedures.

Sohail is well published with at present over 30-peer review publications in the medical literature and has presented at multiple international scientific meetings. He has also written textbook chapters in both Hand Surgery and Plastic Surgery.

Outside of UK medicine Sohail is involved with charitable medical aid work delivering care to those with little or no resources in developing countries. This includes personally going on charitable missions to Sierra Leone as part of a team sent by Wrightington Hospital to provide medical services in the worlds 3rd poorest nation. He also provided emergency surgical relief aid by travelling to Pakistan during the 2005 Earthquake disaster.

Outside of medicine Sohail has a passion for the arts in music, photography and painting. He believes this creative and artistic side greatly complements his work as a Plastic Surgeon.
